Working Principle

The S-8209AAA-T8T1U PMIC is a linear regulation controller for battery-powered applications requiring a wide input and output voltage range. It features a buck converter topology which switches the current at a programmed frequency from the input to the output. This allows the output voltage to be controlled without the need for bulky output transformers, giving a high power density, low quiescent current, and self-discharge control at the same time.

The IC also contains a self-discharge control loop that is designed to limit the amount of power drawn from the battery when the system is off. This works in 3 stages. The first is an internal voltage reference, the second a current sense amplifier, and the last a low pass filter. The self-discharge loop is adjustable and set by the user.

The S-8209AAA-T8T1U also offers dual mode operation: discontinuous (DCM) or pulse skipping mode (PFM).
