PMIC - Battery Management

The S-8209ACL-I8T1U is a Power Management IC (PMIC) designed for battery management in consumer electronics and motor control applications. It is a current mode PMIC with three independent DC-DC regulators and two buck-boost regulators. Additionally, the PMIC also features two low impedance, low dropout (LDO) voltage regulators for supplying low power peripherals.

The regulator outputs are fully programmable up to the maximum ratings. The system’s power needs are met from a single cell Li-ion battery since the device can supply up to 3A of output current at 5V. To reduce power dissipation and improve efficiency, the PMIC contains a fast response on-die current sensing circuit, allowing adjustable output current with a wide range of load current change.

The S-8209ACL-I8T1U also contains integrated protection features. It includes over-current limit (OCL), over-voltage limit (OVL), active low-side short circuit protection (SCD), active high-side short circuit protection (SCD-H) and thermal shutdown protection (TSD) circuits. Additionally, the device’s I/O pins are guarded from accidental ESD/EOS damage.

In consumer electronics applications, the S-8209ACL-I8T1U efficiently delivers power to the system components whether charging, discharging, or in steady state operation. It is used for managing the supply of power in the majority of consumer electronics such as mobile phones, MP3 players, game consoles, portable GPS tracking systems and laptop computers.

The S-8209ACL-I8T1U PMIC also provides motor control in applications like robotic systems, automotive steering assist systems and medical machinery. The PMIC works in conjunction with a microprocessor to control the movement of motors and provide feedback to the system on its current position. The PMIC is used to control the speed and position of the motor’s shaft with precision and accuracy.

Working Principle

The S-8209ACL-I8T1U PMIC consists of three independent DC-DC regulator outputs and two configurable LDO outputs with fast response current sensing circuitry. It provides up to 3A of switchable output current at up to 5V.

The PMIC has a built-in current sensing circuit and error amplifier for each regulator. The voltage of each regulator can be programmed from 0V to the maximum rated voltage by connecting an external voltage setting resistor.

The current limit is also adjustable with the external current setting resistors. The maximum current, which each regulator can supply, is determined by the current limit settings. The precise settings of the current and voltage limits must be adjusted for the optimal protection of the system components.

The PMIC also features active low regeneration (LSD) and active high regeneration (HSD) short circuit protection circuits. Both circuits sense the output voltage and current of each regulator and limit it to a preset limit. If a short circuit situation is detected, these circuits will prevent any further damage by reducing the output current.

Additionally, the S-8209ACL-I8T1U PMIC integrates dual low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulators. These two regulators provide a regulated and stable power supply for low power peripherals such as low voltage ADCs, DACs, and memory devices.

Finally, the PMIC includes an on-chip over-temperature protection circuit (TSD). When the die temperature increases beyond the preset temperature limit, the PMIC will shut down the entire system to protect the device from damage.

Conclusion

The S-8209ACL-I8T1U PMIC is an ideal device for battery management and motor control applications in consumer electronics and industrial systems. It combines multiple current-mode DC-DC regulators, two low dropout regulators, short circuit protection, and over-temperature protection features all in a single device, reducing design complexity and system cost.
