Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) are an absolute necessity for applications such as mobile phones, automotive and industrial systems, just to name a few. One such PMIC is the S-8225AAF-TCT1U.

S-8225AAF-TCT1U belongs to the battery management family of PMICs. Thus, S-8225AAF-TCT1U primarily caters to application fields that require a secured power system and efficient power utilization. Such fields include high-end mobile phones, tablet PCs, portable media players, monitors and set top boxes. Essentially, S-8225AAF-TCT1U is a single-cell Li-ion/LiPo battery charger. This PMIC caters to advanced portable systems and is compliant with the USB2.0 specification. In addition, the PMIC supports a wide input voltage range that ranges from 4V to 25V.

S-8225AAF-TCT1U employs a the “TRUE Charge™” architecture that delivers highest and most efficient charging performance. The PMIC has two major blocks- Power Regulator, and Safety and Protection. The power regulator unit handles the entire charging process that consists of several steps such as pre-charge, constant current, and constant voltage charge. This power regulator can be configured to handle input current, preset battery voltage and top off voltage.

The Safety and Protection function block of S-8225AAF-TCT1U is what adds the “TRUE” to TRUE Charge™ architecture. This block consist of several voltage/current and temperature limits that keep the battery and the surrounding environment safe at all times. The input current and the Li-ion battery voltage and temperature are continuously monitored by the Safety and Protection function and it acts upon any discrepancies.

Furthermore, the S-8225AAF-TCT1U is highly power efficient as it dynamically adapts the switching frequency according to the system. The PMIC is pacaked in a 6x6mm QFN, that takes care of the circuitry area constraint that is faced by many applications. S-8225AAF-TCT1U supports the latest power savings features such as “LE dV/dt” and “VSys monitor”. Both of these features allow the PMIC to re-enter the sleep mode during non-charging periods.

In the LE dV/dt mode, the PMIC measures the voltage change over time. Once the voltage level stabilizes, the PMIC assumes that the battery is fully charged and it goes into standby mode. The VSys monitor re-enters the charging phase when the system voltage drops below the pre-defined level.
