The S-8252ABH-M6T1U is a battery management system family from Seiko Instruments. The product family provides a comprehensive suite of battery management and protection capabilities for a variety of different applications. The S-8252ABH-M6T1U family consists of an IC (Integrated Circuit), an SPD (Synchronous Power Device), and a DC-DC Converter - all combined in one package.
The S-8252ABH-M6T1U system encompasses battery management with regard to safety, quality, reliability and service performance. It monitors battery parameters such as open circuit voltage (OCV), current, temperature, and cell health. It has the ability to properly manage a single cell or multi-cell battery including; Li-ion (Lithium-Ion), Li-Poly (Lithium-Polymer) and other cell chemistry types.
The S-8252ABH-M6T1U provides protection for a variety of conditions that can occur in a battery pack. For example, the device implements low voltage, over voltage, over current, over temperature and short-circuit protection. It also allows the host to safely charge the battery and monitor its health.
S-8252ABH-M6T1U has two modes of working: “charge control loop” and “monitor and control loop.” The charge control loop is used to safely apply charging current from the host power supply to the battery, while the monitor and control loop is used to monitor and control the battery parameters.
The charge control loop includes a regulated precision voltage reference and an adjustable current source coupled with an under voltage, over voltage and OCV (Open Circuit Voltage) lockout mechanism. The current source is used to control the rate of charge and is adjustable with an external resistor. The OCV lockout is used to monitor safety related conditions such as voltage level between cells.
The monitor and control loop consists of RPWM (Reverse Polarity Protection and Monitoring) which is used to detect short circuit and battery reversal conditions, and OCP (Over Current Protection) which is used to detect excessive current. Additionally, the S-8252ABH-M6T1U provides high accuracy temperature control via a digital monitoring and control loop. The accuracy is improved with an analog filter that includes a slope rate detector.
