common mode chokes (CMC) are a type of electrical component designed to provide antenna and grounding solutions for applications which require noise reduction or high-speed transmission capability. They have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their ability to provide significant improvements in signal integrity and noise reduction when compared to traditional methods of noise reduction, such as capacitors and inductors.CMCs are designed to act as a filter for electrical noise and radio frequency interference (RFI) and are usually used in high-frequency and broadband systems. CMCs also provide an additional layer of stability to the power supply by providing a pathway for the return current to flow. This return current reduces overall electromagnetic interference (EMI) and improves the signal quality in a given system.The general design of a common mode choke consists of two windings, which are wrapped around a magnetic core material. The magnetic core material absorbs the energy from the electrical noise and converts it into a magnetic field which is then dissipated throughout the device. The two windings are connected together in a single circuit, creating a single loop; this allows the return current to flow through both windings simultaneously.The working principle of a common mode choke is based on the impedance of a current flow. When an electrical current is sent through the two windings of a CMC, the inductance of the device block the current from flowing freely. This impedes the current flow, creating a back-and-forth current that alternates in both windings which is called a common mode current. The common mode current reduces the effect of noise and RF interference on the signal, increasing its integrity by reducing crosstalk and other interference.SC-02-20JS applications range from automotive, aerospace, defense, medical, and consumer electronics. These devices are used in applications such as signal conditioning, power line filtering, waveform decoupling, and impedance matching. SC-02-20JS common mode chokes are designed for low profile applications with miniature footprint. The devices consist of two windings of enameled copper wire and a ferrite core.
