Common Mode Choke
A common mode choke, also known as SC-03-10JS, is a passive electrical filter used to reduce noise conducted on a common mode. These filters consist of two choke coils wound in opposite directions around a ferrite core. When connected in series with a power line, the inductance of the common mode choke suppresses the common mode noise.
Application Field
Common mode chokes, such as the SC-03-10JS, are typically used in the industrial automation, gaming console, automotive, and medical device markets to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI), protect against voltage transients, and help to achieve compliance with international EMC standards. Common mode chokes can also provide significant protection against power surges, making them a popular choice for high-voltage applications.
Working Principle
A common mode choke works by providing a path for the common mode currents, but not for the differential mode currents. When a common mode signal is applied to the input of the choke, the two coils will generate opposing magnetic fields, which cancel each other out. This cancelation reduces the overall current in the line, thus limiting EMI noise. On the other hand, differential mode signals are not affected because the two coils are generating magnetic fields in the same direction.
The advantage of using a common mode choke in a power line is that it does not affect the differential mode currents, allowing for full utilization of the power line. Common mode chokes also provide a high level of EMI suppression, which is important for meeting international EMC requirements. Additionally, common mode chokes are an economical solution for filtering high-voltage applications due to their ability to provide significant protection against power surges.
