Working Principle

The inductor consists of a core around which is wound a coil of a specific number of turns. This combination is referred to as an inductance/inductancer. When an alternating current (AC) is applied to the inductor, a magnetic field is created within the core. The strength of this magnetic field is proportional to the amount of current flowing through the inductor. This magnetic field induces a counter EMF (electromotive force) into the inductor, which acts to reduce the current in the inductor. This is known as inductive reactance and is unique to inductors.

The reactance of the inductor is determined by the number of turns in the coil and the inductance constant. The inductance constant is a measure of the amount of inductance of a coil per unit length. In addition, the inductance of an inductor is also affected by the core material used, such as ferrite. By choosing the correct permeability, a desired inductance can be achieved.
