Programmable Oscillators

Programmable oscillators are electronic components that generate a certain frequency or periodic waveform of a certain accuracy and stability. These oscillators are typically used for frequency control, phase-locked-loop (PLL) applications, phase shifting, frequency synthesizers, RF communications systems, and various timing applications such as clock recovery. Programmable oscillators offer greater flexibility than traditional oscillators, as the users can change the frequency or waveform generated on-the-fly. One example of a programmable oscillator is the SG-8003LB-SDM.

SG-8003LB-SDM Application Field

The SG-8003LB-SDM is a low-power, programmable oscillator with dual outputs. It has an input voltage range of 1.8 V to 5.5 V and is suitable for use in low-voltage applications, such as mobile phones, tablets and other portable devices, as well as embedded systems. The SG-8003LB-SDM offers frequency flexibility and stability in a small package, making it ideal for products with close tolerance frequency requirements, such as RF communication systems. The devicehas a programmable output cycle of 16 to 255 cycles and can operate in either single-ended or differential mode. The output frequencies of the dual outputs can be tuned independently, with a frequency range from 100 kHz to 1250 MHz. It also features a high-frequency accuracy of 99.5%, allowing it to maintain frequency stability under greater system load.

SG-8003LB-SDM Working Principle

The SG-8003LB-SDM is a programmable oscillator that works by converting a digital input signal into a varying analog waveform to generate an accurate waveform that corresponds to the input frequency. It operates on the principle of charge-pump phase-locked-loop (PLL) technology. In the PLL circuit, an incoming digital signal is applied to a charge pump, which is a device that converts the digital signal into an oscillatory waveform. The waveform is then used to control the current flow in the loop, which in turn allows the output frequency to be precisely adjusted. The input to the oscillator is divided into blocks of 8 bits each by a block generator. These blocks are then shifted into the D flip-flop, which stores the incoming data. The D flip-flop is then clocked with a VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) clock, which is at the same frequency as the output frequency of the oscillator. The VCO clock then triggers the digital-to-analog converter (DAC) at the start of every cycle. The DAC converts the data stored in the D flip-flop into an analog signal, which is then fed back to the PLL circuit to control the timing of the charge pump. The charge pump then adjusts the output frequency accordingly. The SG-8003LB-SDM is a versatile and reliable programmable oscillator that is ideal for many low-power, high-frequency applications. Its small size and high accuracy make it perfect for use in embedded systems, RF communication systems and various timing applications. Its frequency range and PLL capabilities enable it to be tuned to a precise frequency, allowing it to maintain frequency stability under varying system load.
