Programmable oscillators are control systems that are used to produce electrical waveforms with a particular frequency, amplitude and phase at their outputs. The SIT1602ACT8-18E is one type of programmable oscillator that offers extremely low phase noise performance, low power consumption and phase-noise immunity. It features a phase noise floor of -101dBc/Hz in the 1 kHz to 10 MHz range and is compliant with JEDEC standard 56-BB-1.

This oscillator has the ability to generate a waveform of typically 8 to 18MHz and with a temperature stability of less than +/- 0.3ppm over the operating temperature range of 0E C to 70E C. The control input of this oscillator is a 7-bits digital word, which defines the frequency, period, and tolerance. The control input can be a voltage or logic level, and the range of address bits is adjustable. The output waveform is an amplitude- and frequency-modulated square wave.

The SIT1602ACT8-18E are immensely useful in applications that require higher accuracy, low power consumption and low phase noise. These oscillators are often used in embedded processor systems, telemetry systems, clock generation and recovery systems and instrumentation systems, as well as in military and aerospace applications. They are also suitable for ultra-low noise test systems and radiation measurement systems. Besides these, they are used in a variety of applications, such as: low jitter clock generation, digital filtering and timing, and high precision satellite navigation systems.

The working principle of the SIT1602ACT8-18E is quite simple. The device is programmed via a clock input and a 7-bit digital word which are fed into a digital oscillator made up of a voltage-controlled oscillator, a divider chain, and a phase detector. The digital oscillator controls the VCO, which produces an output frequency. The divider chain divides the output frequency by a predetermined amount, while the phase detector compares the two frequencies to generate a periodic signal. The periodic signal is then fed back to the VCO, allowing it to adjust its output frequency to match the desired output frequency.

In addition to the above mentioned features, these oscillators also have excellent immunity to EMI, RFI, vibration and shock. They are also highly reliable, with a predicted failure rate of less than 1 failures per billion hours. Finally, the SIT1602ACT8-18E are cost effective and have a compact size compared to other oscillators, allowing them to be used in even the most space-constrained applications.
