Oscillators are widely used in various electronic devices, such as radios, televisions, telephones, medical devices, and many other areas. They provide a means to generate a stable signal, usually for the purpose of timing, modulation and control. It provides two types of packaging and can be operated up to the temperature range of -40℉ to +85℃. The main job of the oscillator is frequency determination and stabilization. Its oscillation frequency is determined by two key factors. The first one is the resonance of the inductor and capacitor in the tank circuit. The inductance of the tank circuit inductor and the capacitance of the capacitor together forms a tuned circuit, which sets the resonant frequency of the oscillator. The other factor is the external adjustment of the oscillator’s frequency. This adjustment could be accomplished by changing the values of capacitors on the tank circuit. The working principle of oscillators is based on LC or RC oscillation. The LC oscillations are produced when a capacitor connected to an inductor exchanges energy back and forth. This is a feedback mechanism and it behaves like an oscillator. As the charge stored on the capacitor increases, the voltage rises and the inductor opposes the current. This creates a back EMF and the capacitor starts to discharge to the inductor. This process continues until the capacitor is fully discharged, and then the cycle starts again. In addition, RC oscillators work on the same principle, but the components are different. An RC oscillator is composed of two resistors and a capacitor. It works when the capacitor charges up through one resistor and discharges through the other. This creates an oscillating current that will keep on going until the capacitor is fully discharged.
