Programmable Oscillators

Programmable Oscillators are a versatile type of oscillator that enables to be manipulated and tuned to different frequencies according to the user requirements. SIT1602BIB8-XXE application field and working principle

The SIT1602BIB8-XXE is a Programmable Oscillator presented by SITIME which is a company devoted to design and development of precision signal processing and timing solutions. The SIT1602BIB8-XXE oscillator has a high accuracy, stability, and frequency range. It works very well under high-temperature and long time stability. This oscillator is suitable for the fields of communication systems, consumer products, aerospace, and medical equipment.

The operating principle of the SIT1602BIB8-XXE involve an input signal which is used to initiate the oscillations inside the chip. This signal is dictated by an internal clock circuit and its frequency is determined by BiStable circuitry (BIS-Star) on the chip. The BiStable circuitry can be adjusted by an external capacitor and/or resistor, allowing the user to set the frequency of the oscillations, which can range from 256 Hz to 20 MHz. This oscillator provides a wide operating temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. The low-noise output signal and the ultra strong ESD protection allow the chip to work in tough working conditions.

The oscillator has several modes of operation. The common mode is the Linear Frequency Mode (LFM) where a linear increase/decrease of the frequency is used to steer the signal. The signal is performed by a step size on an input signal which is adjusted by an external capacitor. Other modes include the Register Frequency Mode (RFM) where multiple registers are written to program a certain frequency and the Counter Frequency Mode (CFM) where a clock divider with programmable division is used to steer the signal.

The SIT1602BIB8-XXE is also capable of providing a variety of output types. Common output types are the CMOS (Single ended) and TTL (Differential). Other output types include LVPECL, LVDS, CML, and ECL as well as Input Detect and Clock Enable/Disable functions. One of the most important features of this oscillator is its jitter optimization. This feature is used to achieve low-jitter performance in applications such as high-speed communication.
