It uses a quartz crystal as the resonator, and the quartz crystal is cut at a certain angle which determines the oscillation frequency. The oscillator circuit also uses an integrated circuit (IC) chip containing a negative resistance circuit (e.g. Colpitts circuit, Pierce circuit, and Clapp circuit). The electrical signal from the resonator is amplified by the IC chip, and then filtered and buffered. After that, the amplified signal is output from the output pin of the IC, and the oscillation frequency is determined by the resonator.
