Programmable Oscillators are widely used in electronic devices as they offer precise frequency control and excellent performance thanks to their programmable features. SIT8008BIA1-18S is a typical Programmable oscillator. This article will cover its application field and working principle.

Primarily, SIT8008BIA1-18S is an oscillator with an 18-pin dip package, suitable for applications such as ADC, DAC, PLL and audio applications. The oscillator covers a frequency range of 14 to 125MHz, with a startup frequency of 20KHz, and the stability at 25°C is ±10 ppm. It has a typical phase noise of -104-105 dBc/Hz at 1KHz offset and is freely programmable PLL-based 0.01%/°C temperature coefficient for frequency as well as voltage control. It is suitable for applications that require small jitter.

SIT8008BIA1-18S is able to generate 10 different frequencies at the same time and come with a 12-bit DAC to offer ease of change in the frequency. The frequency can be changed without the need to manually calibrate the oscillator. The oscillator also has output high and low times that can be adjusted frequency can be adjusted by writing to a control register. It also has a built in clock generator to generate additional frequencies.

As for the way it works, SIT8008BIA1-18S consists of a crystal/oscillator, voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) which converts input voltage to frequency and a phase detector which compares the phase of the reference and oscillator signals, and deriving the output frequency of the oscillator. Voltage-controlled oscillator generates the desired frequency by controlling the amplitude of the input voltage. The phase detector detects any difference between the phase of the input and output frequency. It tells the VCO to change the frequency by increasing or decreasing the current through the transistor.

SIT8008BIA1-18S contains an oscillator, ADC and DSP that track the phase difference between the reference signal and the external signal, and then adjusts the output frequency of the oscillator. The DSP adjusts the frequency of the oscillator depending on the output voltage of the voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). When an error is detected, the DSP adjusts the frequency of the oscillator according to the error voltage. This error voltage determines the output frequency of the oscillator.
