Programmable oscillators are a type of oscillator which can be tuned to different values of output frequency. The SIT9003AC-3-33SO (hereafter referred to as the SIT9003) is a programmable oscillator from the company Symmetricom that has a range of application fields and operates according to a specific set of principles.

It increases the flexibility of the system by allowing up to 8 external programmable reference frequencies to be used, as well as providing several clock/reset out and “standby” functions. The SIT9003 outputs a high-quality stable frequency, with 0.2 ppm accuracy and 0.03 ppm stability over a -40°C to +80°C temperature range.

In terms of its working principle, the SIT9003 works by using the PLL1 to calculate the most efficient frequency ratio to maintain a stable output frequency. The output oscillator can be tuned by changing the value of the DACs and the reference frequency. The PLL1 also enables the oscillator to detect and correct for any shift in frequency as the result of changes in temperature or other environmental factors. The reference frequency is then shifted until it is within the range and accuracy of the oscillator’s optimum frequency.

The SIT9003 also offers a “wide-dynamic” range, which allows for greater flexibility in the range of output frequencies that can be attained. It is designed for use in low power applications, having a low standby current and improved power consumption. The SIT9003 also provides a digital monitoring feature, that can be used to track the output frequency and other parameters of the oscillator.
