Overview of Programmable Oscillators

A programmable oscillator is a type of clock generator, which allows a user to adjust output frequencies, output waveforms, amplitudes and rising and falling edge times as desired. It also features an easy-to-use programmable frequency setting and programming features. Typically, these oscillators use highly-specialized integrated circuits, such as MEMs oscillators and silicon-on-sapphire-based surface acoustic wave (SAW) oscillators.Oscillators become more stable at higher frequencies, which allows programmable oscillators to provide higher frequency accuracies and improved jitter performance compared to analog or traditional crystal oscillators.

Working Principle of SIT9005ACA1G-25SI

The SIT9005ACA1G-25SI programmable oscillator is a highly integrated SAW oscillator. It consists of an oscillator core plus an on-chip analog-to-digital (A/D) converter, digital-to-analog (D/A) converter, programmable resistor divider and switchable buffers. The A/D convertor translates the analog input voltage into digital control words (DCDs). The D/A converter then converts the digital control words into an adjustable output frequency. The programmable resistive divider to scale the output frequency of the oscillator. The SIT9005ACA1G-25SI features a programmable edge time, which greatly affects jitter characteristics. Edge time is determined by the characteristic impedance of the tracking filter from which the SAW device operates and the Q of the device.The SIT9005ACA1G-25SI programmable oscillator supports an input voltage range of 3.3V to 3.6V and is capable of generating a frequency output range of 600MHz to 1.2GHz. It has very competitive power consumption of 1.8mA max current at 4.0V supply voltage.

Applications

The SIT9005ACA1G-25SI programmable oscillator is ideal for many high frequency applications, such as multi-rate synchronization, embedded microprocessors, ASICs, base station repairs, wireless networks, and back-end clock distribution. The programmable frequencies for the oscillator make it ideal for applications that require frequent changes in frequency or need to optimize their output frequencies for optimal performance. Further, its low jitter, wide frequency range and adjustable phase control make it well-suited for use in phase-locked loops, clock & data recovery, and timing generators. Additionally, it is suitable for a variety of high-speed communications applications, such as data transmission and storage, digital broadcast, and point-to-point communications.
