Programmable Oscillators

Programmable Oscillators are specialized types of electrical oscillators that are designed to be easily adaptable to the changing frequency requirements of many application-specific tasks. An oscillator is an electronic device that produces a signal that oscillates, or alternates, between two states known as logic ‘1’ and logic ‘0’. Programmable oscillators replace traditional mechanical or electronic components, such as crystals or other temperature-stable reference components, and are used in a wide range of consumer, automotive, instrumentation, medical, digital signal processing, microprocessor and other applications, where accuracy, precision and stability are required. A commonly used programmable oscillator is the SIT9005ACA2G-25ED, a crystal oscillator designed and manufactured by the Major Semiconductor company, Major Semiconductor Corporation. This oscillator is designed specifically to be installed on a compact outline PCB and can be programmed to provide a range of frequencies and different operating modes for specific applications.The SIT9005ACA2G-25ED is presented in a miniaturized, 6-pin SOP (Small Outline Package), and features a quartz crystal and a ceramic resonator. It is possible to use either a single crystal or a pair of crystals in a high frequency system. The oscillator is designed to operate at 5.0 V and is rated to provide currents of 3.0 mA in steady state, 0.5 mA typical and 0.1A maximum at the recommended operating temperature of -40 to +85 oC. The SIT9005ACA2G-25ED oscillator is supplied with a programmable internal digital frequency control which can be programmed over a range from 0.25 to 120 MHz. This allows the device to be used in applications that require high precision, stable operation and lowcost implementations, such as cellular phones, pagers, digital TV and radio, digital cameras and digital signaling systems. The frequency is programmed via an 8-bit digital information port, with a fixed multiplier configuration with two options. The SIT9005ACA2G-25ED offers a selection of operating modes including 1-pin, 3-pin and 3-state (stabilized CMOS) modes. The 1-pin mode is a one-line oscillator circuit and is only available with the single crystal configuration. The 3-pin mode is a three-line oscillator circuit and consists of an oscillator section, mode selection and synchronous/asynchronous configuration. In 3-state mode, the oscillator output can be synchronized to any other CMOS logic compatible signal and in addition, the C sector output pin can be programmed to generate either a 200 or 400 KHz or 0.5 or 1.0 MHz square wave output.The oscillator also features an optional standby feature that reduces current consumption to just 0.1A during inactive periods. This feature ensures maximum battery life in battery-operated devices and systems.In addition to its low power consumption, the SIT9005ACA2G-25ED offers excellent stability with its high frequency accuracy. It is also very tolerant of temperature variation and its low current consumption ensures that it does not generate any radiation or cause electromagnetic interference. Overall, the SIT9005ACA2G-25ED is a highly versatile programmable oscillator that can be used in a variety of applications. It has been designed to provide a cost effective and reliable solution to customers\' needs while offering excellent performance. It is ideal for use in applications requiring highly accurate, stable frequencies and is highly recommended for its low power consumption, reliable operation and cost effectiveness.
