Programmable OscillatorsProgrammable oscillators are devices that generate periodic and predictable signals of different frequencies with the capability to configure each signal in different ways. This is possible because of their unique setup which combines a controllable active element, such as a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), with a passive element such as capacitors, resistors, and inductors. The SIT9005ACL2H-18DN is a type of programmable oscillator that belongs to a family of ultra-low phase-noise oscillators produced by SiTime. This device is suitable for use in applications that require an extremely low phase-noise signal, such as signal conditioning, satellite communications, and radar applications.The SIT9005ACL2H-18DN is designed as a complete PLL-based oscillator consisting of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and a phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer. It contains all of the components necessary to produce a wide range of output frequencies up to 600 MHz, with a high degree of accuracy and stability. The device also includes a built-in digital programmable divider which allows for precise frequency selection.The operation of this device is based on a phase-locked loop frequency synthesizer which is comprised of three basic elements: an input reference, a digitally-controlled variable frequency oscillator (VCO), and a programmable divider. A reference clock signal is provided to the device and is compared to the VCO output signal. A digital control circuit computes the difference and adjusts the frequency of the VCO accordingly to maintain the same frequency as the reference. The programmable divider is used to select the exact desired output frequency by dividing the VCO output frequency by a predetermined factor. The SIT9005ACL2H-18DN can be programmed with a host microcontroller or a serial peripheral interface (SPI). The device is capable of storing up to eight different sets of programming settings, allowing for easy and precise adjustments without the need for any additional components.The SIT9005ACL2H-18DN is suitable for applications in which extremely low phase-noise and low-jitter signals are required.
