Programmable Oscillators

The SIT9005ACR2D-XXEP is a programmable oscillator from a family of devices that allows users to configure the oscillator output frequency to suit their application. This family of devices has an impressive range of features from very low power consumption to high frequency and output voltage capabilities.The SIT9005ACR2D-XXEP includes an on-chip, high-performance frequency synthesizer and voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). The VCO combines with a divide-by-N prescaler, a high-speed divider and two analog-to-digital converters (ADC’s) on the same chip to provide a complete frequency control and command interface. The device also includes an on-chip clock module to generate the reference frequency and a non-volatile memory to store the programmable parameters.The SIT9005ACR2D-XXEP’s programmable frequency range spans from 250kHz to 950MHz and is divided into two ranges: a low-frequency range from 250kHz to 19MHz and a high-frequency range from 19MHz to 950MHz. The device has a frequency resolution of 0.5% over the entire range. It also has a wide output voltage range from 3.3 volts to 5.5 volts, with a maximum frequency stability of +/-5% over the entire operation temperature range.The device supports user-defined programming using a UART serial interface. This allows the user to program the device’s VCO frequency and output voltage via the on-board MCU. In addition, the device has an internal micro-controller unit (MCU) that allows users to interact with the device through various commands and read the status of the device.The SIT9005ACR2D-XXEP is ideal for applications that require high frequency stability and precision frequency control. It is used in applications including frequency monitoring, frequency synchronization, frequency sampling and synthesis, and frequency management.The working principle behind this oscillator is that when the output frequency is equal to the reference frequency, the phase-locked loop (PLL) configuration will reach equilibrium. The frequency is tuned via the PLL’s phase-frequency-detector (PFD) and voltage controlled oscillator (VCO).The SIT9005ACR2D-XXEP’s VCO is able to generate a frequency output depending on the reference signal frequency and the amount of phase difference between the two signals. This phase difference is used to control the tuning voltage of the VCO, changing the output frequency accordingly.Once the oscillator is programmed, the device will keep its output signal frequency stable and accurate over a variety of temperature and supply voltage changes.
