A PFD is used to compare the frequency of the signal coming from the VCO with a given reference frequency. This reference frequency is generated by the PFD and is referred to as a “tuning” signal. When the tuning signal is different from the frequency of the VCO, the PFD sends a signal to the voltage regulator of a VCO, increasing or decreasing its output frequency until the desired frequency is obtained.
