Inrush current limiters (ICLs) can be used to limit the instantaneous inrush current to a given limit, ensuring the safe operation of a device. The SL12 1R010-A is a type of inrush current limiter designed specifically for use in AC/DC power supplies with tight tolerances.
When the SL12 1R010-A is used, an inrush current is restricted to a predetermined limit and the device is prevented from exceeding the acceptable level of current. This helps to prevent the damaging and expensive consequences of electrical fires and surges that could otherwise be caused by too much current being supplied to a device.
The SL12 1R010-A ICL operates on the basis of a temperature-compensated, negatively-temperature-coefficient (NTC) thermistor. The thermistor is designed to allow a low-resistance path for a current surge when the power is first supplied, while preventing the current from exceeding the accepted level.
The thermistor is connected in series to an AC load. When power is supplied, the current surge causes the thermistor to increase in temperature and its resistance to decrease. This reduces the current, allowing the device to draw only a diverted portion of the current. As the thermistor cools, its resistance increases and the current is limited to the predetermined level.
The SL12 1R010-A ICL is ideally suited for application in power supplies, battery chargers, and other AC/DC electronic devices. It is designed to provide reliable current limiting for peak inrush currents up to 6A or higher – depending on the application and maximum power rating.
