Working Principle

Unlike a traditional fuse, the SMD250-2 is a small device composed of two components: a resistive element and a thermistor (an electronic component whose electrical resistance changes with temperature). When the temperature increases or current flow rises to an unsafe level, the fuse element begins to heat up, and the thermistor’s resistance increases. This rapidly increases the heat of the element, causing it to melt, cutting the wires connected to it, and effectively resetting the circuit.

Once the fuse is triggered, the typical resistance of the thermistor rises to a much higher threshold and stays that way until the excess heat and current dissipate. To re-activate the safety fuse, the component must return to ambient temperature - a process which generally takes between 15 minutes and an hour.
