STR-A6151M application field and working principle

STR-A6151M is a multiple-use off-line switcher IC package, classified under AC/DC converters and Offline Switchers. Consisting of a power MOSFET, a primary side circuit, and a start-up circuit, it is a build-in IC that provides over-current, over voltage, short circuit, and all kinds of circuit protection functions.

Applications

STR-A6151M can be used in a wide range of applications. Examples include but are not limited to AC/DC and DC/DC switch mode power supplies (SMPS) both as flyback-type and as forward-converter output and motor control applications. It is intended to be used as a primary switching element in power supplies with output power within 25W. Working Principle

The principle of operation of the STR-A6151M is based on the use of a power MOSFET as a valve to regulate the power flow between two power supply stages. The operation consists of two connected processes for the primary side of the power supply: “Power MOSFET switching” and “Start-up circuit charging”.

Power MOSFET switching

The power MOSFET switch is activated by a base voltage, or by a switching signal sent from the IC to the power MOSFET’s gate. After that, the current flows from the input terminal of the power MOSFET to its output terminal, where the power is transferred to the secondary side of the power supply.

Start-up circuit charging

The start-up circuit is an energy reservoir connected to the gate circuit of the power MOSFET. Its charge is maintained by a startup current which is constantly fed to the gate circuit. When the power MOSFET switch is activated, the start-up circuit charge is used to quickly accelerate the power MOSFET’s conduction, allowing the power supply to operate with a higher efficiency than conventional circuits.

Protective Functions

The STR-A6151M includes a variety of protective functions in its design. These functions are vital to ensure the safe and efficient use of the IC for a wide range of applications. Such protection functions are:

  • Over-current Protection: Prevent over current from damaging the power supply.
