The STR-V653 is a cutting-edge integrated offline switcher produced by Semtech Corporation. It allows designers to create simple offline switcher solutions with low no-load power consumption, as well as improve cost efficiency and save board space. This integrated circuit (IC) integrates a primary side MOSFET, oscillator, two error amplifiers and many other features, which can keep the maximum output power and the highest efficiency.

The STR-V653 operates within the AC/DC power converter field and can provide up to 6.5W of output power when placed with an open-frame PCB. An additional 12W output power is achieved when this IC is used with a metal-core printed circuit board (PCB). When employed in HR and LR (hard rectifier, light rectifier) circuits, this switcher can offer 3W of output power.

The working principle of the STR-V653 is quite simple and follows the standard AC/DC converter set-up procedure. Basically it has two parts, the power stage and the control stage. The power link is designed with a full bridge rectifier, and each bridge is equipped with a MOSFET. Additionally, the floating-pin of each bridge is linked to the feedback point. This integrated circuit is connected with a proper fly-back transformer, and its primary side winding is connected with input power supply and gate driver circuit.

In the control stage, the primary-side pulse width modulation (PWM) circuitry is used for generating different output voltages, and the PWM frequency is currently set at 40kHz. Additionally, the integrated optical isolation component is used for providing active regulation, and the primary-side voltage is monitored by the feedback and cycle-by-cycle current limiting feature. Furthermore, the overcurrent protection component and the over temperature protection components are used for protecting the IC from over-current and over-temperature causes.

The STR-V653 chip contains two power stages and two independent error amplifiers, providing both constant voltage (CV) and constant-current (CC) mode operations. The full voltage range of the chip is 14V-380V, and the maximum input current of the high frequency transformer is 0.7A. The integrated chip also offers 3.2A peak and 1.7A steady-state current outputs. Additionally, the chip also has an adjustable soft-start period of 1ms, designed for reducing the peak inrush current.

Finally, the integrated MOSFET in the STR-V653 chip is provided with a synchronous rectifier for attaining a higher efficiency. Moreover, its internal protection measures, such as short-circuit protection, over-temperature protection, and over-current protection are designed for protecting both the power stage and the control stage from any electrical damage.
