STR-W6253MD is a product of Sanken Electric which is especially designed to meet the requirements of AC DC converters, offline switchers and other applications. It contains an integrated power switch controller and an auxiliary switch. The main features of this IC include a power on reset with power-on time delay, a fast response time, low leak current, over temperature protection, dual MOSFET gate drive, power saving mode and a short circuit protection.

Application Field

STR-W6253MD is mainly used as a power switch for AC to DC converters, offline switchers, High Power Factor Pre-Regulator (HPPF) for universal AC-input applications, and other related applications. This IC employs an asynchronous rectangular and a synchronous rectangular operation to minimize turn-on losses and minimize EMI.

Working Principle

STR-W6253MD utilizes a combination of synchronous and asynchronous mode of operation for maximum efficiency, low losses, and harmonic distortion. The synchronous mode of operation is used at light load and it enables the control to synchronize the rectified waveform onto the Power Switching FET gate drive. During the synchronous mode, the power supply must provide a bias voltage to the IC.

On the other hand, the asynchronous mode operation is used at higher loads and it provides efficiency improvements due to lower turn-on losses. During the asynchronous mode, the IC relies on the rectified power and the DC output to provide a bias voltage to the IC, allowing for higher efficiency results.

The STR-W6253MD is a self-powered, single-chip power switch controller with standby, standby off and internal or external dead time. It provides several protection functions for safe operation, such as thermostat junctions, start up and low current protection, over temperature protection, reset, soft start and short circuit protection.

STR-W6253MD possesses the advantages of low operating current, fast response time, and low voltage drop that help to minimize standby power dissipation and reduce the power loss of AC-DC converters.
