When a positive voltage is applied at the input, the switch is turned on and the current begins to flow through the transformer winding increasing the magnetic field around it. When the switch is turned off, the input voltage collapses and the stored energy is released in the form of a reduced output voltage. The shunt regulator connected to the output keeps the output voltage constant.
