Tantalum - Polymer Capacitors

Tantalum-polymer capacitors operate differently than conventional electrolytic capacitors. Instead of being made up of a solid anode and electrolyte, they make use of an electrolyte that is present in the form of an alkali solution. The electrolyte is essentially a liquid containing charged ions that are attracted to an anode electrode consisting of an inert material, such as tantalum. Because of this, the anode electrode is able to store a much larger charge than other types of capacitors. Additionally, the electrolyte helps to provide a layer of insulation between the electrodes, further increasing the capacitance and improving the power efficiency of these capacitors. Within the capacitor, the anode and cathode electrodes are separated by a tantalum-polymer material which acts as a dielectric – this helps to increase the capacitance and reduce the ESR. Additionally, the material also helps to reduce the leakage current and also aids in preventing the build-up of electrical charges on the surface of the capacitor.Advantages
