Oscillators: TB-54.000MCD-T application field and working principle

Oscillators are utilized along diverse industries, and in any application where an accurate frequency stabilization is required, it performs masterly, being the TB-54.000MCD-T one of the most used in both research and commercial purposes. This component is a digital oscillator made of an oscillator configuration, providing an adjustable output frequency from 54 to 68MHz. It is handled by an analog CMOS digital interface with TTL and CMOS moderate power. It has an outputs of +5V DC to +3.3V DC, and a maximum output power of +13.5 dBm.The TB-54.000MCD-T is a good select for Frequency Modulation (FM) circuits. It can be adjusted to generate a precise frequency with a better than -100dBc/Hz in-quadrant phase, and with a total harmonic distortion less than 0.005%. This oscillator enjoys an high reliability and stability, with low current consumption of approximately 10 mA. Furthermore, it is an advanced oscillator that provides a robust and tunable performance.Regarding the behavior of this oscillator, we can identify two operation modes: Push-Pull and Charge-Pump. The later one contains a resistor/capacitor network paired to the components, while the Push-Pull has an integral part of a passive filter that allows to obtain an output of Amplitude Modulated (AM) signals.

Push-Pull Operation Principle

In Push-Pull mode, the current transfers from the capacitor to the output, using the voltage based on the current’s transfer function. This function is defined in the form of an equation with V as the output voltage, and R and C as the corner frequencies. The whole transfer is dependant of the oscillator as the source: when in Push-Pull, the capacitor charges and discharges itself in the opposite phase to the sourcing signal. This way, the capacitor’s voltage increases, and the output levels switches accordingly to the variation of the standards of the resistor/capacitor network.

Charge-Pump Operation Principle

In this operation mode, the oscillator behaves as a charge-pump circuit. The output voltage is represented as the difference between two successive currents across an integrating capacitance. This means that the output reacts to the changes of the instantaneous current, independently of the frequency or the amplitude. Furthermore, this oscillator is prepared with an effective compensation and stabilization mechanism, which includes temperature compensation and a special feature to compensate for the effects caused by the surrounding components and impendances due to external connection. The TB-54.000MCD-T oscillator is an accurate and reliable component for many different applications, like FM receivers and modulators, local oscillators of receivers, low noise up/down converters, tunable filters, up/down converters and master oscillators. In conclusion, the TB-54.000MCD-T oscillator is a reliable component that provides an excellent stability and precision for many industrial applications, generally in relation with wireless systems, radios, and signal processing. The component is able to provide an adjustable output frequency from 54 to 68Mhz with moderate power output and low current consumption. This oscillator has two operation modes: charge-pump and push-pull, each with their own comprehension and benefits. Additionally, the oscillator enjoys an effective compensation and stabilization mechanism.
