The TLC5941PWP is a so-called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) LED driver, and as such allows digital control over an analog signal. It enables analog output by “freezing” a given duty cycle and current setting at a certain moment, while allowing the LEDs to be varied over succeeding time intervals. In other words, a certain light intensity can be obtained by adjusting the duty cycle (time of occurrence of “on” over the given time interval).
A LED Driver is an integrated circuit that serves as a constant current source, which is able to provide the internal resistance and accompanying electronics to protect the LED from burnouts resulting from surges in current as would be the result of applying a direct voltage source to the LED. The constant current source provides the LEDs with just enough energy to deliver its full brightness, while allowing the voltage source to remain virtually unregulated.
The TLC5941PWP offers the following array of features:

The TLC5941PWP, as an adaptive LED driver, is suitable for a variety of topologies. In particular, the four channels provided can control different sets of RGB type LEDs, as well as independent dual colour LEDs. A great feature of this device is the possibility to adjust the current level at each channel, enabling each led in the chain to have a different brightness.
These features, in addition to its compatibility with I2C interface (and the SPI protocol in the BCD variant of this TLC5941PWP) make it ideal for many creative and automated applications in digital-controlled lighting displays, flashing indicators and warning signs, interactive installations with LEDs, notification systems, etc.
The working principle of the TLC5941PWP is based on the control of the LED current through an external resistor. The resistor should be placed between the OUT pin in the IC and the LED anode. Thus, the IN pin will provide the current that will define the LED brightness. In other words, the IC will act like a current controlled resistor. It is important to note that the current at each OUT pin will be limited by the value of its respective IN pin, so the higher the voltage in the IN pins, the brighter the LEDs.
When the IC is in its inactive state, no current will be flowing from the OUT to the IN pins. This will result in a maximum off-state current that is limited only by the source voltage in the OUT pins. This maximum brightness can be adjusted further by tying the GDDRV pins HIGH (enable mode) or LOW (disable mode). When pins are tied HIGH, the IC works in its normal “enable” state, while when tied LOW its normal “disable” state will be maintained.
In order to make sure the IC is properly working, the EN pin needs to be connected to the VDD voltage, so that its active state is known. This is done by either tying the pin to VDD, or by tying it to the GDDRV pins while they are tied HIGH.
Finally, the current mode of the IC can be adjusted by connecting the input pins (IN0 to IN15) to either VDD or GND. The current coming out of these pins will depend on the voltage present at them. If the voltage is high, the current will be low, and vice-versa if the voltage is low.
Therefore, the TLC5941PWP is an ideal LED driver for applications where LED brightness needs to be moderated, such as LED Strips, Matrix and Bar Graphs displays, RGB LEDs color mixing, etc.
