The TMOV20RP130E is a transient voltage suppressor (TVS) designed to protect sensitive electronics and semiconductor components from transient surges caused by lightning, inductive switching, or static discharge. The product family consists of a variety of devices with different voltage ratings and power dissipation capabilities. The TMOV20RP130E is an 18V transient voltage suppressor (MOV) designed with an extended operating temperature range of -40 to +125°C.
This robust device can protect exposed electronics against damaging transients of up to 1600W per line (3.3kA; 2-8/20µs surge current capability). It also provides an extra margin of safety by offering a guaranteed clamping voltage under highly stressing environment. It can be found in applications such as instrumentation, telecommunications, computer peripherals, and power management systems.
The TMOV20RP130E is part of a family of Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) that use a sintered ceramic body to provide surface-to-surface contacts and thereby enable one of its highlights―extraordinary immunity to vibration, shock, and acceleration. It acts as a low-pass filter and uses the energy of the transient to create a clamping voltage, thus protecting the equipment downstream and making the MOVs safer than other transient suppressor technologies. TVS arrays, on the other hand, offer a solution to more complex power surge protection requirements as they are easily configured to multiple voltage levels.
The TMOV20RP130E are designed to offer high-frequency lightning and switching transients protection with low clamping voltage, low leakage current, and enhanced capacitance. They can be connected in series to double their clamping voltage and increase their surge energy handling capability up to 3250 W peak pulse power. They provide fast operation response time and low capacitance values under 1000V.
Metal Oxide Varistors or MOVs are used to protect sensitive equipment from excessive Voltage and current spikes generated by lightning or power equipment caused by arcing during circuit switching, opening of circuit breakers and inductive load switching. MOVs have an optimum working principle which depends on the extremely high electron density within the mov junction. This is known as a \'space charge region\' that acts as a \'variable resistor\' known as varistor or MOV.
MOVs are composed of a ceramic material containing both conductive and non-conductive particles, which are positioned in a way which causes the resistance of the MOV to increase as the voltage increases. When a transient occurs, the resistance decreases and the energy is diverted to ground, thus protecting the protected circuit. They are simple in construction and reliable in operation. Since they are non-linear devices, a combination of MOVs can be used to reduce impedance over a much wider voltage and current range in a linear fashion.
The TMOV20RP130E provides an enhanced level of protection compared to other competitors with its excellent low clamping voltage at high energy, low leakage current, and fast response time. It is specifically designed to effectively dissipate any energy resulting from transients without creating a path to ground that would create potential equipment damage or noise. It is also designed to be virtually indestructible over the lifetime of the product.
