Digital Signal Processors (DSP) are a form of specialized microprocessor that has been designed specifically to undertake operations within the digital signal domain. The operations on these signals include analog to digital (ADC) and digital to analog (DAC) conversion, calculations, filtering and various other signal processing operations.
The Texas Instruments\' tms320c6745bptp3 DSP is an optimized multi-core processor designed to offer high performance and scalability for complex embedded systems. The tms320c6745bptp3 is the first member of the enhanced TMS320C67x+ floating-point architectures and leverages the latest generation of the industry-leading TMS320C6000 series core.
This processor is applicable to a wide variety of embedded systems such as consumer electronics, professional audio/video, automotive and telecom systems. The processor makes use of an optimized 450MHz platform frequency level 1cache, an on-chip bus controller and a multi-gigabit interconnect. The processor has a high signal processing throughput rate of 40 million multiplies and accumulates per second, and provides a 9.2 gigabit interconnect bandwidth, ensuring data in the signal chain is accurately transmitted.
The TMX320C6745BPTP3 DSP incorporates many features making it a reliable and robust solution for embedded applications. These features include on-die programmable interrupt controller with twelve priority level, derived from six device interrupts, and on-die power management and pll blocks which facilitate low power dissipation in stand-by modes.
The TMX320C6745BPTP3 makes use of the Von Neumann architecture which consists of an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and a control unit. The Von Neumann architecture allows the processor to be programmable and thus, it can be programmed to solve a variety of problems in the digital signal processing domain. In the Von Neumann architecture, the Program Counter (PC) tells the processor the address of the next instruction that needs to be executed, while the instruction register (IR) stores the instruction in binary form.
The TMX320C6745BPTP3 also features an array of debug peripherals like trace log, event trigger, watch point, emulation breakpoints and memory breakpoints thus providing at-speed debugging and trace support for real-time debugging.
The APGG Memory Controller (APGMMC) in the TMX320C6745BPTP3 DSP enables transfer of data from the external memory to the internal processor RAM and for general peripheral apps, enabling flexibility for the programmer. The dynamic memory controller (DMC) enables access to external memory. The UMC facilitates program and data memory segregation, memory mapping, resource sharing among multiple masters and data coherency.
The TMX320C6745BPTP3 also includes multimedia extensions to provide accelerated performance for image, sound and video processing. These processors can be used to integrate a variety of applications like 2D/3D graphics, MPEG-2/4, Voice over IP (VoIP), digital video processing, and so on.
