Application Field And Working Principle Of TPS92660PWP/NOPB
PMIC - LED Drivers, including the TPS92660PWP/NOPB, are power management integrated circuits (PMICs) designed specifically for driving LEDs. The LED driver from TPS92660PWP/NOPB is an integrated high efficiency LED driver with a boost-mode control circuit. It is designed for use in notebook PCs and other medium and large size LED systems. This driver has an adjustable switching frequency up to 1.2MHz and provides adjustable current control with a minimum current resolution of 25mA. With the built-in protection of the system, the output current of the LED driver can be adjusted accurately by controlling the external voltage and clock frequency.
TPS92660PWP/NOPB device integrates the boost mode Switch regulator, the current sensing amplifier, the voltage regulation loop, the OVP/UVP protection , the short-circuit protection and the EMI filter. In order to avoid frequency interference, the PWM control mode is used in this device. A PWM (pulse width modulation) is a method for varying the average value of the voltage being applied to an electronic load by controlling the pulse duration, or width, of the signal.
In general, there are four basic functions of the boost mode circuit of TPS92660PWP/NOPB. First, the input voltage should be below the minimum working voltage of the device, the boost circuit will turn on the Mosfet to start working. Secondly, the inductor current will be proportional to the input voltage. Thirdly, when the inductor current reaches its peak, the boost circuit will switch the Mosfet off and open the conversion. Finally, when the inductor is discharged, the output current can be obtained by adjusting the external voltage and clock frequency.
The TPS92660PWP/NOPB can operate in constant-current mode and can provide a very accurate LED current (down to a resolution of 25mA) by changing the external control line. It also has an adjustable switching frequency up to 1.2MHz and an adjustable VSTART (minimum LED forward voltage after connect) value that supports most LED types. This driver allows users to dynamically switch the LED brightness under high-voltage power sources such as Li-Ion batteries.
In addition, this high-performance LED driver features over-voltage and over-temperature protections as well as a smooth & silent transition circuitry for EMI reduction. These features not only ensure the efficiency and safety of the TPS92660PWP/NOPB system, but also make it an ideal solution for lighting applications in notebook PCs, large size displays, digital cameras and other devices.
