The module consists of an RF IC with a pair of transceivers, an ultra-low power MCU (the ATmega16L) and several MCU I/O. The RF IC is the transceiver element of the module, containing the required power amplifier (PA), low noise amplifier (LNA) and all of the ancillary circuit blocks for signal conditioning. The core of the module is the power management system, which includes a pair of voltage regulator circuits for the RF IC, a battery monitoring system, and a power switch control circuit. This allows the module to operate in low power standby mode to conserve battery life.

The transceivers on the module operate in the ISM frequency band mostly in the 868 – 915MHz range. Interfacing with the antenna on the module is achieved through an RF interface connector, which is used to connect the antenna to other external components such as a base station counterpart. Internal MCU I/O can be used to connect to external peripherals, such as infrared transceivers or other digital devices.
