The optical receiver is a Photo Detector with remotely induced photocurrents. The receiver element consists of PIN photodiode, preamplifier, band-pass filter and schmitt trigger circuit on the same chip. When the incident light is received by the photo diode, then the LED output is generated which can be fed into the microcontroller to detect the signal.

The working principle of TSOP-36156TR is simple. The photo diode in the receiver is exposed to the source light at a wavelength which is detected in the Nitrogen, Argon or Xenon lighting conditions. The light source is typically an infrared LED. The light is then converted into a current in the photo diode which is then amplified by the preamplifier. The signal passes through a band-pass filter which allows the frequency to be determined before passing into the Schmitt trigger circuit.

The Schmitt trigger converts the analog signal to a digital one, and the logic level out puts of the schmitt trigger are fed into the microcontroller to detect the signal. The time between the signal reception and data output via the LED is only a few microseconds which makes this device an attractive application for remote control systems.
