It is patented design covered by US Patent 6, 190, 594 and by US Patent 6, 262, 664. The device operates with a 940 nm propagation signal frequency.Application FieldThe main application of TSOP53556 is to receive modulation signals with high output impedance and long distance. This device is designed with the advantages of a straight forward design and a simplified construction compared to discrete devices. Another feature of this device is that it operates with lower power consumption than other types of receivers. This is due to its photo-voltaic design, which minimizes energy consumption.The device is well suitable for a range of applications such as automotive remote keyless entry (RKE), power metering, security systems, wireless reading devices and remote sensor networks. It is also ideal for applications that require long distance infrared communication such as remote operation of street signs, billboard lighting and airport signage applications.Working PrincipleThis device is based on the photo-voltaic effect. It senses the infrared energy, generated from the special indicators, when placed in the path of the transmitted signal. It responds to the modulated radiation as a function of the optical level.When the external optical energy of the transmitted signal reaches the TSOP53556 receiver, the energy is converted to a proportional electrical current and then passed through the onchip gain control and amplifier stage. The output from the amplifier is then conditioned to get the required level, before it is sent to the output.The output of the amplifier and gain control stage is also connected to a on-chip comparator which analyses the output level and sets the response time of the receiver. This response signal determines the maximum output frequency and minimum duty cycle of the receiver.This device is an ideal choice for low cost, low power, and low speed applications where receiving long distance infrared signals is required.
