Common Mode Chokes
Common mode chokes, also known as electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters, are used to reduce electrical noise caused by electromagnetic interference, which is an interference generated by nearby electrical machinery, usually consisting of either random or weakly correlated signals. They have a variety of applications, such as suppressing electrical noise between cable pairs, measuring motor currents, and providing a common ground return path for transformer coils. Common mode chokes are typically utilized in low-power, relatively low-frequency environments. The TTC-4096 (Terminal Transformer Chip) represents a miniature integrated common mode choke of a special type, which utilizes a multilayer package and features a built-in terminal transformer. It is designed to block EMI from entering and leaving the system, while allowing normal communication between the PCB and other parts in the system. As well, the TTC-4096 reduces the inductance of the primary filter, providing high-impedance paths for common-mode signals with smaller capacitive elements.The TTC-4096’s construction consists of a multilayer ceramic substrate with a metal layer on each side, which resemble the windings of a transformer. The device is typically used in signal and power lines and is especially suited to high-speed, high-frequency circuits. The polyester and polyimide films used in the TTC-4096’s multilayer package offers excellent physical properties such as strength, toughness, flexibility, low dielectric constant, and low thermal expansion. The terminal transformer technology utilized in the chip enables a reduction in the equivalent inductance of the primary impedance filter and the number of components needed in the circuit, while increasing the attenuation of common-mode signals.The core material used in the TTC-40096 is an iron-powder core termed a "Flex-Core", which offers superior magnetic characteristics compared to traditional cores. This core material ensures long term stability and allows the device to better cope with varying ambient temperatures and EMI conditions. The working principle of the TTC-4096 is based on the concept of an isolated magnetic field, which is achieved by selectively coupling key components together (like a transformer). The magnetic field created by the core is then used to block or attenuate EMI. Additionally, the terminal element on each terminal of the chip serves as a short-circuit so that the EMI waves will not make it to the outside of the system. To summarize, the TTC-4096 provides excellent EMI blocking capability as well as superior physical properties, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of applications.
