The UCC2580N-4G4 is an easy-to-use, low-cost current-mode PWM controller with excellent reliability and robust design for offline AC/DC switching power supply. Many of its features are built with the performance and reliability that industrial application designers need.

UCC2580N-4G4’s primary application field involves the power supplies and other applications based on low power and low cost AC/DC systems.

The device offers various advantages such as a fast error amplifier which allows fast transient responses, excellent line and load regulation, and low watts-per-pound power dissipation. The PWM sections and timing sections of this controller are designed to reduce the total component count, greatly smalling the design space. Working Principle

UCC2580N-4G4 is based on the current-mode peak current sense architecture, and can operate in two distinct modes: continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The peak current control in CCM and valley current control in DCM ensure excellent transient responses and fast response to load changes.

The main difference between CCM and DCM is the amount of ripple current. When operating in DCM, the ripple current is low and the input current of the power stage is highly suppressed; while in CCM, the ripple current is relatively high, but the input current is higher, allowing the power stage to have more output power.

The UCC2580N-4G4 also features a low component count circuit for soft-start, an error amplifier to compare the measured voltage and the generated voltage, an oscillator to generate a frequency, and an output driver to drive the power stage. This driver has the ability to drive up to 0.5A current.

The UCC2580N-4G4 is capable of controlling both primary-side and secondary-side switching power supplies. On the primary side, the device can operate in either voltage or current mode depending on the applications; and on the secondary side, the device can operate in constant frequency, constant off-time, or current mode.

By using various protection functions, including UVLO, OVP, OCP, and others, the UCC2580N-4G4 has better operational reliability and extended lifetime. With a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C and a fast transient response, this device is suitable for a variety of industrial applications.
