The UCC2802 Micro voltage Mode PWM (Pulse-Width-Modulator) controller is a voltage mode PWM controller optimized for offline switch-mode power supply (SMPS) applications like switching power supplies, battery chargers and any other type of power conversion that requires a PWM controller IC. The application field and working principle of the UCC2802MDREP controller will be discussed hereunder.

The UCC2802MDREP is suitable for a broad range of AC/DC and non-isolated applications. It is able to operate isolated and non-isolated SMPS. Examples of these applications include isolated and non-isolated fly-back, forward and Push-pull converters. The UCC2802MDREP has an internal fault protection that limits ON-time and peak currents and inherent built-in Anti-ringing protection.

The key features of the UCC2802MDREP are a wide input voltage range of 8V to 85V, an operating frequency range from 25 kHz to 500 kHz and an adjustable threshold volts for soft start. The controller also has several protection features such as cycle-by-cycle current limit, peak current limit, under-voltage lock-out (UVLO), auto-restart and thermal shut-down. Other features include a wide differentiator range, adjustable peak current sense, under voltage lockout and integrated hysterisis control.

The UCC2802MDREP has a low start-up current of 6 mA and a very low input current of 1000 uA. It has an adjustable two-level constant minimum on-time control circuit, allowing for the control of the current source. This provides accurate DC gain control, allowing the current source loop to run in either current mode or voltage mode without additional components.

The UCC2802MDREP provides a signal that can be used to drive an opto-coupler or any other signal needed to control a power switch. It provides programmable dead-time to reduce the ringing in the inductor. As part of its protection features it offers over-temperature protection (TSD). It has a low-power-on capability ensuring safe startup operation when connected to power sources with high inrush currents.

The working principle of the UCC2802MDREP is based on pulse-width modulation. This technology rapidly turns the power switch on and off, thus changing the amount of power consumed by the load from no power to full power. The ON/OFF frequency is determined by the values of the on-time and off-time control pins. The frequency of the pulse-width modulation is adjustable by the user. The peak current value is limited by the adjustable peak current sense limit. The output voltage is regulated by the constant off-time control circuit until the desired load is reached.
