UCC28630D belongs to a voltage mode offline Flyback controller with PWM, which is a kind of simplified and cost-effective solution for basic offline converters from PMIC - AC DC Converters, Offline Switchers.This device integrates a 680mΩ power MOSFET and features an adjustable operating frequency from 30kHz to 500kHz, operates up to 100V and can provide up to 5A output current. In terms of its application field, UCC28630D is ideal for offline Flyback adapters, including mass production of FAST charging applications. In the flyback controller design, the mains frequency and output voltage are largely independent up to a reduced switching frequency fSW. UCC28630D has various built-in protections as well, such as winding temperature sense and over-voltage protection. Its power-saving feature helps users design more efficient converters and also lowers system-level cost by reducing energy cost and improving the converter performance.The working principle of UCC28630D starts with the phase-locked loop system which uses hysteretic behavior to control the on/off cycle timing. An external RC network allows selection of the operating frequency range. When the pulse-width modulation (PWM) signal is high, the internal MOSFET can be turned on, thus providing an output current. The on time interval of the PWM signal governs the output voltage of the converter ( Vout = Vin*Ton/Toff ). When the PWM signal transitions from high to low, the MOSFET will be turned off, and the energy stored in the converter’s inductor will be released into the converter’s output, thus transferring the energy (W o =V o × I o ×η/f) form the power source to the loads.Also, the Pulse skipping control is optimized for light load’s efficiency which eliminate the waste of power with no output power for low power applications.
The wound temperature sensing uses an IGBT to provide the feedback of the winding temperature and will adjust the MOSFET’s conduction level when the temperature exceed the specified limit. The external voltage setting can either be done directly through a resistor or through an auxiliary winding from the output transformer, depending on the user\'s design needs.
The overvoltage protection (OVP) circuit monitors the output voltage and shuts off the power source if the output voltage is exceeding the maximum allowable value. The protection circuits also mitigate protection against power MOSFET overheating, which increases the circuit’s reliability and prevents the output voltage from overshooting the predetermined value.
