Working Principle of V150ZC8PX2855

A Varistor is an electrical component designed to protect the sensitive electrical components from over-voltage or current spikes. A typical Varistor is formed by semiconductor material sandwiched between two metal electrodes. When a direct current is applied to the electrode, the semiconductor material creates a voltage-dependent resistance. In the case of high voltage, a large amount of current is suddenly drawn through the device reducing its total voltage. This is known as \'clamping\' and occurs regardless of the direction of the current flow. In the case of V150ZC8PX2855, it consists of zinc-oxide grains packed in ceramic beads placed between a pair of metal electrodes. The zinc-oxide grains demonstrate high resistivity under normal operating conditions which decreases with rising voltage. Once the voltage approaches a certain level, the electrical current starts to increase dramatically allowing the Varistor to absorb over-voltage pulses and protect against electrical shorts.
