Varistors, or Voltage Dependent Resistors (VDRs), are often referred to as "surge suppressors" and are used to reduce surges and other high voltage/frequency impulses. They are used in many applications such as switchgear, telecommunications, and other power supply equipment. The voltage dependent resistor consists of a ceramic disk which is sandwiched between two terminals. When a voltage is applied to the device, the disk will change its resistance proportionally, depending on the voltage applied. This change in resistance is called the volumetric and is measured in V/V (volts per volt).
The V20P20P is a specific type of Varistor. It is a 2.5mm-diameter disk with two pin terminals, which provides high current and voltage protection against transients. The product is consists of an epoxy sealed Zinc Oxide (ZnO) disk encased in a J-shaped metal oxide Varistor (MOV) housing. The metal oxide Varistor technology increases the energy absorption of transient protection devices by dissipating the transient energy through the collector diode. The device provides 15kA surge capability with fast response.
V20P20P Varistors are used to protect equipment against surges that could otherwise damage the equipment or cause a short circuit. They can be used in data circuits to protect against over-voltage conditions. In addition, they can be used in AC or DC circuits for protecting sensitive equipment from voltage spikes, such as AC power line transients, lightning surges, ESD, or RF energy. They are also used as surge protectors to protect against over-voltage, over-current and over-voltage.
The working principle of the V20P20P Varistor is based on the transmission of electrical energy through the resistance of the ZnO disk when the voltage is applied. When a voltage is applied to the Varistor, electric charge is generated in the ZnO layer. This charge induces a current in the circuit which is proportional to the applied voltage. As the voltage increases, the current also increases thus protecting the circuit from high voltage or short circuit conditions. The MOV technology provides extra protection by dissipating the excess energy as heat.
The V20P20P Varistor also provides a stable resistance than can be adjusted depending on the application requirements. It is highly reliable and provides the required characteristics to protect the circuit from over-voltage or short-circuit conditions. Its wide operating temperature range (–40°C to +85°C) ensures that it can be used in a variety of environments. In addition, the V20P20P Varistor can be combined with other protection devices or components to provide an even higher level of protection. Its compact size also makes it suitable for use in small equipment.
