TVS Varistors, MOVs are a type of overvoltage protection device, which utilize a unique electrical characteristic to protect against short-term and sustained voltage spikes. An overvoltage protection device, also known as a voltage-dependent resistor (VDR) or a voltage-dependent capacitor (VDC), works by providing resistance to electrical current that is in excess of the protection threshold. This resistance causes the voltage to drop, dissipating the incoming surge and protecting the circuitry from damage.

The V20P30P (Voltage Suppressor/Protector) is a type of voltage-dependent resistor (VDR) and is specially designed for the protection of signal lines in telecom communications equipment and Test & Measurement systems. It features a high continuous current capability up to 2A, a wide operating temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, and is capable of protecting up to 150V withstanding most spikes lengths without any failure.

The V20P30P operates on the same principle as other VDRs, which is the Gummel-Poon model. This model is based on a two-interconnected PN semiconductor junction which has the ability to turn on and off when the voltage across the junction reaches a certain threshold. As voltage increases, current flows through the PN junction, causing the voltage to drop. When the voltage drops below the threshold, the junction turns off, resulting in the voltage then being diverged back to the original voltage.

In the case of the V20P30P, this threshold is 120V. When the voltage goes above this threshold, the device will begin to conduct current, providing a resistance between the input and output terminals. This resistance prevents the voltage from continuing beyond the spike and dissipates the excess energy, thus protecting the line from any further damage.

The V20P30P is used in applications such as wireless base stations, lighting, industrial automation, and security systems. It is often used as part of a \'low-dropout\' (LDO) voltage regulator in order to prevent large current flow due to a high voltage on the input. This helps to protect the regulator from damage caused by excessive current as well as preventing damage to the output device.
