V20P95P Application Field and Working Principle

TVS – Varistors, MOVs are commonly used in electrical circuits to protect them from voltage transients and surges, and the V20P95P is the one of their kind. It is able to stand up to the most extreme transients that might otherwise damage the components within the circuit. As such, its application field includes applications that directly apply to the greatest of transient voltages. This includes, but isn\'t restricted to, lightning protection, DC/DC converters, inverters and lighting.

The V20P95P is a non-linear device that consists of a stack of varistors which are encapsulated and electrically connected in a series. It offers superior surge protection and can accommodate a range of voltages and transients, up to the maximum voltage of 95V. The device can withstand transient voltages starting from 2.4V and can handle up to 6kA continuous current, 6kA of peak power and 5kA peak current.

When a high voltage, exceeding the Clamping Voltage, is applied to the V20P95P, the varistors draw a current that is proportionate to the applied voltage, and thus limits the voltage felt by the other components within the circuitry, thus preventing it from damaging them. The device achieves this by proportionally-increasing its current draw test point slope, which is proportional to the current flowing through it during a transient situation.

The V20P95P also features an EoS protection based on built-in diodes. This protection is designed to keep the varistors in the device from reaching their maximum rated capacitance during an extremely long and/or severe transient event, thus ensuring the device remains functional even during such events.
