TVS (transient voltage suppressors), MOVs (metal oxide varistors) and V300LC20CPX2855 are connected to electrical power supplies, helping protect circuits against damages caused by voltage spikes, high frequency and temperature variations, over current, electrostatic discharge, and lightning. While all the three are designed to manage electrical spikes, each has its own application field and working principle.
TVS are unidirectional voltage-dependent devices, composed of an avalanche breakdown junction that works like a reverse-biased zener diode. When transient voltage events like ESD or lightning strikes occur, the voltage across the TVS increases rapidly, causing it to conduct triggered by the avalanche breakdown mechanism. TVS are typically designed to divert and absorb high voltage overshoot, and therefore the TVS wastes away this extra energy by heating up to help prevent the overload from damaging the circuit. This type of surge protection device is commonly used in electrical and electronic equipment susceptible to surges and disturbances from the utility power line, or from induced lightning strikes. TVS in smaller power supplies are also used to protect the onboard circuits from accidental electromotive forces (EMF).
MOVs are bi-directional voltage-dependant devices, composed of a special ceramic material and electrodes on each side. During a transient event, they twist down, thereby increasing their resistance level and limiting the flow of current, resulting in diversion of all the dangerous energy and noise away from protected equipment. To minimize voltage surge damage, MOVs over its lifetime develop the ability to absorb more energy and the ability to dissipate or divert away more energy from the source. This type of surge protection device is commonly used as a protection element in larger power supplies, such as in high power motors, UPS systems, HVAC systems, electronic line frequency, water systems, and other power systems. MOVs can also be used to protect personal computers, laptops, and other equipment against common power line and electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources.
The V300LC20CPX2855 is a voltage-dependent capacitor, using aluminum electrolytic construction and metal-oxide film technology. The device is composed of a thin film oxide layer that separates two electrodes, and it uses a combination of capacitance and resistance in order to provide effective surge protection. It is designed to provide filtering and an enhanced level of protection against high voltage and other transient events that can damage the circuit. This protection device is commonly used in electronic circuits, such as VRMs, and EMI filters, to limit the peak voltage during transients or other surge events. The V300LC20CPX2855 is designed to detect and attenuate common mode noise from power supplies, and is effective over wider frequency bandwidths than MOVs.
In summary, TVS, MOVs and V300LC20CPX2855 are all surge protection devices that help protect circuits and electronic equipment from damages caused by transient voltages and over currents. Although they all have similarly constructed designs, they each have their own particular application field and working principle. TVS protect against transient overvoltages and ESD and lightning events, MOVs protect against high voltage surges, and V300LC20CPX2855 provides much broader protection against common mode noise.
