The V48AUMLA2220H varistor is a device designed for protecting sensitive electronic equipment against damaging voltage transients caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD) as well as electrical fast transients (EFT). It is particularly suited for use in automobile applications due to its low insertion loss and high surge handling capability. Working Principle

The V48AUMLA2220H is a metal-oxide-varistor (MOV) based device. A metal-oxide varistor functions by using a semiconductor material that is composed of zinc oxide and other additives. As a voltage transient exceeding the varistor’s zener breakdown voltage is applied across its terminals, the charge carriers (electrons and holes) start to move at a very high rate and thus create a large width of avalanche breakdown zone. This phenomenon is also known as the ‘avalanche effect’ and this effect increases the varistor’s current flow thus effectively limiting the voltage transient.

The V48AUMLA2220H can be effectively used for surge protection and as a voltage transient absorber. It offers excellent electromechanical characteristics such as fast activation time, low voltage drop, soft clamping characteristics and high surge capability. Additionally, its internal wiring is designed to dissipate heat quickly and its package design is optimized to provide effective heat sinking ability.
