The V48B3V3H150B is a DC/DC converter from the Vicor Corporation. It is a non-isolated, integrated, step-down converter, designed to provide 3.3 V power from a source input of between 24 V and 48 V. It uses internal power MOSFETs, and an advanced silicon-on-insulator CMOS control technique to provide high efficiency as well as protection against output overvoltage and short circuit events.The V48B3V3H150B is ideal for powering low voltage electronics, as it is an integrated solution which eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming power infrastructure design and layout. This makes it an ideal choice for high density microprocessor, FPGA, ASIC and other integrated circuit applications.DC/DC converters convert a dc input voltage into a lower dc output voltage. In the case of the V48B3V3H150B, 48 V source is regulated to precisely 3.3 V. It works by using an internal switch which repeatedly turns on and off to control the output voltage. This is referred to as “pulse width modulation”, or “PWM”.At each cycle, the switch is turned on while a capacitor is charged to a voltage that is higher than the peak voltage of the input sources. When the switch is turned off, the voltage on the capacitor is bled to ground. This creates a series of pulses of constant voltage at the output, each pulse shorter in duration than the previous one. By controlling the on/off ratio of the switch, the converter can deliver a regulated output at the desired voltage.The V48B3V3H150B also includes a thermal control system which protects it from overheating. The chip has built-in thermal protection circuitry that will automatically shut off the converter when the chip temperature reaches a critical threshold.
