The buck-boost converter utilizes a combination of both topologies to provide either positive or negative output voltage and currents.In a DC-DC converter, the output voltage is regulated by controlling the switching transistor or thyristor with a feedback loop. The feedback loop monitors the output voltage and compares it with the desired output voltage, through a built-in error amplifier. If the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the error-amplifier then adjusts the switching cycle of the transistor or the thyristor to increase the output voltage, in order to reach and maintain the reference voltage.
