DC-DC converters are used to provide a regulated output voltage from an unregulated input source. The most common example of this is supplying a fixed output voltage from a vehicle battery with an input voltage that varies as the vehicle runs. In order to achieve this regulated output voltage, there must be a converter that modulates the output voltage based on the input voltage. The two most common types of DC-DC converters used in automotive applications are the VE-2NV-CY and the Buck converter.

The VE-2NV-CY converter is an isolated converter, meaning that the input voltage is separated from the output voltage. It uses two switching transistors to convert the input voltage to the desired output voltage. A high side driver is used to control the amplitude of the voltage signal, while a low side driver is used to control the duration of the signal. The main advantage of the Buck converter is its size, as it does not require two transistors and can use a much smaller inductor than the VE-2NV-CY converter.

Both the VE-2NV-CY and the Buck converters are commonly used in automotive applications, such as battery charging systems and LED lighting. To ensure a constant and reliable output voltage, the input voltage must be regulated to some degree. The VE-2NV-CY and the Buck converters are both effective methods of providing a regulated output voltage, and both have their advantages and disadvantages.
