DC-DC converters are essential in many applications from industrial to consumer. The standard buck converter, for instance, is used for converting a voltage supply from a higher voltage to a lower voltage, where the ratio between the voltages is defined by a reference. Other topologies of DC-DC converters have different operating principles and have different applications.

The two-terminal forward-current mode, or VE-2TF-IY converter, operates under the same principles as a buck converter, however, it is made up of a single inductor and can switch its input impedance by changing the direction of the current passing through it.

Working Principle

The VE-2TF-IY converter is designed such that when power is applied, the input current begins to flow into the inductor, generating a magnetic field. As the magnetic field reaches its maximum value, the inductor begins to switch and the current is directed away from the inductor. As the current reverses direction, the energy stored in the magnetic field is dissipated as heat.

The output voltage is set by a reference voltage and the energy is stored by the capacitor. As the current reverses direction, the voltage across the inductor is reversed, causing the current to flow out of the inductor and through the diode. This process continues until the output voltage is achieved. The output voltage can be controlled by adjusting the reference voltage.

The VE-2TF-IY converter is also able to switch its input impedance by changing the state of the inductor. This allows the converter to function as both a buck and boost converter, depending on the load current. By altering the direction of the current the converter is able to adjust its input voltage to provide the desired output.

VE-2TF-IY converters are efficient, low-cost, robust and small, making them ideal for a variety of applications. The fact that they can also offer both buck and boost functionality, as well as the ability to switch input impedance makes them suitable for a wide range of applications.
