DC-DC converters are used in a variety of applications such as powering automotive electronics, supplying power to modern consumer electronics, providing regulated voltage to various digital circuits, powering lab instruments, etc.
A VE-BOX-IX is a DC–DC converter module from Vicor Corporation, which enables efficient conversion of power from one voltage level to another with the help of advanced IC technology. This high power module is designed for use in a wide range of applications and industries including industrial, aerospace, transportation and consumer markets.
The VE-BOX-IX contains a variety of components such as an inductor, a Schottky rectifier, an input capacitor, a high-frequency transformer, an output capacitor, a MOSFET, a voltage regulator, and a thermal sensor. This device utilizes full-bridge topology to achieve high efficiency levels up to 96% over a wide input voltage range of 4.5V-14V.
The working principle of VE-BOX-IX starts with an AC input voltage that is rectified into DC using a Schottky diode. The rectified DC is then routed to the input capacitor for filtering. Next, a high frequency transformer magnetically couples the input and the output and reduces the voltage depending upon the turns ratio of the transformer. The MOSFET then switches the input voltage pulsed using a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal which is generated from the power control circuitry.
Once the input voltage is switched and filtered at the input capacitor, the AC voltage is then routed to the transformer, which steps up or steps down the voltage depending upon the turns ratio. The output of the transformer is then rectified using a Schottky diode and further filtered at the output capacitor. The output voltage is then regulated to the desired level using an integrated voltage regulator.
The VE-BOX-IX DC–DC converter provides high efficiency over a wide range of input voltage and current levels. It also features a low profile design which is ideal for systems with limited space. In addition, this device provides superior EMI performance, enabling it to be used in wide range of applications. Furthermore, it is cost-effective and ensures superior performance for its end users.
