DC-DC converters play an important role in providing the right kind of power for applications where components must be powered from an alternate source or from the same source at a different voltage than the source itself. In many cases, DC to DC conversion is indispensable for ensuring reliable power supply for industrial applications. This article will discuss the VE-BTP-EV application field and working principle under the DC-DC converters umbrella.

VE-BTP-EV stands for voltage-enhanced, buck-type-power, and electric-vehicle converter. In general, the VE-BTP-EV design is used for efficient power conversion in motor and generator drives for electric vehicles. It is based on a closed-loop control principle, and its efficient operation is realized by using a hysteretic-based control strategy that regulates the output voltage. Furthermore, the buck-type-power converter provides the desired voltage step-down or step-up capability.

The working principle of the VE-BTP-EV consists of two basic parts. The first part is the buck-type power conversion. In this process, the input voltage is stepped-down or stepped-up to the desired output voltage. This process is accomplished by using a switching voltage regulator which uses a bridge rectifier as a power controller to adjust the output voltage. When the output voltage is above the desired level, the bridge rectifier switches off the voltage regulator, and when the output voltage is below the desired level, the bridge rectifier switches on the voltage regulator.

The second part of the working principle of the VE-BTP-EV is the hysteretic control strategy. This strategy is used to control the output voltage of the DC-DC converter. This is accomplished by adjusting the amount of voltage step-up at the input of the power converter. The bridge rectifier in this process is either on or off. When the input voltage is above the desired level, the bridge rectifier switches off and prevents the output voltage from increasing. When the input voltage is below the desired level, the bridge rectifier switches on, and the output voltage is raised to the desired level.
